RALEIGH, N.C. Sharnise Beal scored a game-high 23 points to help NC State hold off a pesky Georgetown team for a 61-58 victory Wednesday on the cusp of New Years Eve at Reynolds Coliseum.
On a night when NC State (8-6) struggled mightily from the free throw line (14-for-26) and turned the ball over a season-high tying 22 times, the Pack out rebounded a much bigger Hoyas squad 39-32 and shot 50-percent from the field to earn a third straight win all coming since head coach Kay Yow has been away from the sidelines due to a low energy level. The Wolfpack’s hall of fame mentor missed her third game in the last nine days.
Coming out of halftime, the Pack led by double digits and controlled play in during the opening 20 minutes. The lead grew to 13, 34-21, after a pair from the free throw line by Shayla Fields (13 points) just over a minute into the second half.
After freshman Bonae Holston made the first of two free throws to put NC State up 39-28, the Hoyas put together a methodical 15-4 run to tie the game for the first time, 43-all with 9:26 left on a three-pointer by Rubylee Wright.
But the resilient Pack answered right back with five straight, including a three-pointer by Brittany Strachan with 7:38 to play, to take a 48-43 advantage.
Strachan came up big later with back-to-back buckets to make it 56-50 after the lead was cut to three. Only a three-pointer before the final horn by GU’s Shanice Fuller made the final score look closer that it really was.
NC State scored the first five points of the game and led 13-4 after a floater in the lane by Beal at the 10:29 mark of the first half. Strachan added a long jumper from the corner a few moments later to cap a 12-0 run that gave the Pack a 17-4 advantage.
Georgetown (10-3) responded with an 8-2 run to make it 19-12 Pack, but Beal converted a conventional three-point play to put them back up 22-12 with just over five minutes left in the opening stanza.
Beal continued her work with a turnaround jumper from the paint to give NC State a 28-17 advantage with 2:34 left until halftime.
The Pack went into intermission up 30-19 with Beal scoring 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor.
