RALEIGH, N.C. A new scoring duo has emerged for NC State with Shayla Fields and Sharnise Beal combining for 34 points in a 76-38 victory over Jacksonville State Monday afternoon from Kay Yow Court at Reynolds Coliseum.
Hall of Fame head coach Kay Yow missed her second straight game on the bench for the Wolfpack (7-6). According to Yow her energy level was still not where it needed to be for her to coach the team.
Yow missed last Monday’s game at Columbia after it was revealed that the severe cold weather in New York worsened symptoms that normally are more tolerable for her in North Carolina.
A game removed from Fields and Beal scoring 40 points together last Monday in a win at Columbia, Fields led all scorers with 21 points, while Beal added 13. The balanced scoring attack continued with 11 points by both Nikitta Gartrell and Brittany Strachan, while Lucy Ellison notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
First-year junior transfer Inga Muciniece had 15 rebounds as the Pack hauled in 60 rebounds for the first time since March 15, 1998 against Youngstown State
It was a mismatch from the start as NC State scored the first six points of the game and led by double figures after a three-pointer by Brittany Strachan six minutes into action.
It was 21-5 after another three-ball by Fields midway through the first half and the rout was on for the red and white.
The Wolfpack limited JSU to shoot just 18.5 (5-27) percent in the first half on its way to a 34-15 lead at intermission.
The lead grew to as many as 38 points late in the second half
Fields moved past Carisse Moody (1,050 points) for 23rd on the Pack’s all-time scoring list.
Jolie Efezokhae led Jacksonville State (3-8) with 16 points.a
