BLACKSBURG, Va. The NC State volleyball team fell to 9-20 (3-11 ACC) on the season with a 3-0 loss at Virginia Tech on Friday, Nov. 7. The Hokies moved to 17-6 (9-3 ACC) with the decision.
Arlee Tamietti’s eight kills led the Wolfpack offense, while Margaret Salata and Isis Gardner each added six. Alex Smith lifted 24 assists, and Kelly Wood secured 14 digs. Aiwane Iboaya had four total blocks, moving her season total to 101.
Justine Record (13) and Taylor Parrish (10) combined for 23 of Virginia Tech’s 44 kills, as Erin Leaser amassed 35 assists. Jill Gergen had 15 digs, while Record and Kirsty Blue both had three total blocks each.
Four tied scores and two lead changes spiced up the opening set, the most competitive of the evening, which the Hokies claimed 25-23. The Pack trailed by five late at 20-15, but a run of four points and three more quick scores forged a 22-all donnybrook. The Pack kept things tight, moving the score to 23-23, before back-to-back kills from Kristine Cunningham and Blue put VT over the edge.
Virginia Tech followed suit with another close victory, 25-22, in the second stanza. NC State trailed by just one at 23-22 very late in the action, but again the Hokies got back-to-back kills, this time by Record and Parrish, to close out the set.
State hit -.118 in the third and final game, falling 25-16. The Hokies took advantage of the Pack’s match-low hitting clip by offering a match-high .258 effort and leading during the entire frame.
NC State will take on Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 8. Play will begin at 7 p.m.
