Volleyball Ends Season with Loss at UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. NC State ended its 2008 campaign with a 3-0 loss at North Carolina on Friday, Nov. 28. The Wolfpack finishes the season with its most victories since 2004 at 9-26 (3-17 ACC), while the Tar Heels move to 21-10 (15-5 ACC).
Arlee Tamietti led the Pack with 10 kills, while Alex Smith had 24 assists. Kelly Wood recorded 11 digs and Margaret Salata etched three blocks.
Heather Brooks led UNC with nine kills and five blocks, while Brianna Eskola added 16 digs. Erica Behm (17) and Stephanie Jansma (14) combined for 31 of the Tar Heels’ 37 assists.
North Carolina took the first three scores of the day and led throughout in the opener, ultimately winning 25-15. Both teams hit at match-high clips in the first set, with the Pack offering a .114 while UNC hit at a .452.
NC State grabbed the first two points of the second frame, but UNC bounced back quickly and took the lead for good when an Isis Gardner attack error began a 10-point Tar Heel run that pushed the score to 14-5. State then called a timeout and collected the ensuing point, but North Carolina closed out play at 25-14.
Despite three tied scores the Pack never led in the third and final stanza, falling 25-16. A Brooks attack error knotted play at 14-14 late in action, but UNC rattled of eight straight points to move its lead to 22-14.
Aiwane Iboaya, State’s lone senior this year, ends her career at 10th in school history for total blocks with 316. She also put up 620 kills. The St. Joseph, Mo., led the squad this season in blocks with 120 and was second in kills with 231.
