Volleyball Falls to Miami on Senior Night

RALEIGH, N.C. Despite several lengthy leads, NC State lost to Miami in three sets on Friday, Nov. 21 during Senior Night at historic Reynolds Coliseum. The defeat moves the Pack to 9-25 (3-16 ACC), while the Hurricanes climb to 25-6 (13-6 ACC).
Aiwane Iboaya, State’s lone senior, went out with a bang as she led the team in both kills (10) and total blocks (7). Allyson Weissberg added seven kills of her own, while Alex Smith pushed up 22 set assists. Kelly Wood (12) and Lindsey Benac (10) combined for 22 of the squad’s 46 digs, and Margaret Salata dropped three service aces.
Three Miami players, Lane Carico (13), Angelica Ellis (10) and Genny Mayhew (10), put up double-digit kill totals, and Katie Gallagher etched 38 assists. Cassie Loessberg grabbed 13 digs.
The Pack jumped out to a quick 3-10 lead in the opening frame, but it failed to stand. An Arlee Tamietti attack error knotted the score at 18-all before the Canes took its first lead at 19-18 on a Gallagher kill. Despite another tied score, Miami held on to the lead for good, but State never trailed by more than two points before falling 25-22.
NC State grabbed the first three points of the second stanza, but the Hurricanes responded and eventually took charge at 6-5 on a Mayhew kill. Several mini-runs aided Miami, which ultimately won 25-15.
The red and white’s best statistical performance came in the third and final frame, hitting .147 despite losing 25-19. Weissberg nailed four kills in as many attempts, while Salata (2) and Iboaya (3) each sprinkled in a few of their own.
NC State’s season will draw to its conclusion next Friday, Nov. 28 against North Carolina in nearby Chapel Hill. Play is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
