RALEIGH, N.C. No. 6 Florida State overcame a two-goal deficit by scoring five times in the second half for a 5-2 win over NC State Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale for both clubs.
NC State (8-12, 0-10 ACC) struck for the only goal of the first half in the 25th minute. Katie Ruiz began the play with a corner kick to the feet of Lindsay Vera. She took the short kick, turned and fired into the far left corner from 15 yards out. It was her team-leading ninth goal of the season in her final collegiate game.
The Pack took a 2-0 advantage at 48:18 when a deflection off a Seminole defender’s head went right to Paige Dugal and she deposited a shot into the net from eight yards out for the freshman’s fourth marker of the season.
The two-goal advantage was short lived, however, as 29 seconds later Katrin Schmidt gathered a through ball from Tiffany McCarty and she beat keeper Kim Kern one-on-one from inside 10 yards.
A controversial penalty kick was awarded to FSU in the 61st minute and set piece specialist Sarah Wagenfuhr connected on her shot to square the match at 2-2 with just under 30 minutes to play.
The nationally ranked Seminoles continued their offensive pressure and finally took the lead on a header by Sanna Talonen for her 14th goal of the year at 82:51.
FSU added two more goals late. First it was a direct kick into the upper left corner by Wagenfuhr. Later McCarty found the back of the net for her 10th of the season.
Kern made 11 saves, before being taken out in the 80th minute when an apparent hand injury occurred after hauling in a point blank shot by the Noles. Rachel Barnette made one save in just over 10 minutes.
Kate Milstead made one save in goal for FSU.
Vera and fellow senior Tami Krzeszewski were honored before their final college game in a brief ceremony. Both were four-year starters that have started more than 70 games the past four seasons. Vera finishes her career among the best goal scorers in program history. Today she scored her 27th career goal.
