Wake Forest Tops Volleyball in Four

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State took the opening game against Wake Forest but ultimately fell, 3-1, on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Reynolds Coliseum. The loss moves the Pack to 9-22 (3-13 ACC), while the Demon Deacons climb to 17-11 (8-8 ACC).
Three Wolfpack players, Arlee Tamietti (10), Aiwane Iboaya (10) and Isis Gardner (10), put up double-digit kill totals, while Alex Smith recorded 39 assists. Kelly Wood led the team in digs with 12, while Tamietti provided 11 and Smith added 10. Iboaya also etched four blocks, pushing her season total to 107.
Kadija Fornah and Natalie Mullikin both up 14 kills for WFU, as Ashley Homitz supplied 13. Kelsey Jones had 52 assists and Megan Thornberry amassed 17 digs. Mullikin also wrapped up five total blocks.
The Pack grabbed the first five scores of the evening, holding on to its early lead for a 19-25 opening set decision. State hit a match-best .343, slamming 15 kills and committing a paltry three attack errors.
The red and white’s kill statistics in the first frame were equaled by its output in both the second and third stanzas combined, as the Deacs bounced back with 25-15 and 25-20 victories. Wake Forest had its best statistical showing in the second game, hitting .375 compared to the Pack’s .080. NC State had eight kills and eight attack errors in the third game, while WFU hit .211 with 15 kills.
The crowd of 510 fans got some “free volleyball” in the final game of the evening, as played was extended to acquire the two point margin of victory. Wake Forest led late and served for match point on several different occasions, but the Pack refused to wilt easily and knotted the score several times over. When the dust settled, back-to-back scores gave the Demon Deacons a 31-29 decision.
In all, the final frame saw an astonishing 16 tied scores and five lead changes.
NC State will host Duke this coming Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. Live stats will be provided on GoPack.com, while ACC Select will offer live video streaming.
