RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State men’s soccer team used three second-half goals in defeating visiting Gardner-Webb, 4-0, on Saturday night at the NC State Soccer Stadium. The Wolfpack (3-6-1) used a pair of goals from junior Alan Sanchez in a span of just over one minute midway through the second half, and defeated the Bulldogs (3-7) with a 4-0 score for the second straight year.
NC State struck first in the 21st minute. Sanchez won a ball in the midfield and played a pass to classmate Ronnie Bouemboue on the left wing. After a few dribbles, Bouemboue struck a hard shot from about 30-yards out that found the back of the net at the 20:03 mark. The goal was Bouemboue’s fourth in the last three games, and his team leading sixth of the season.
The first half saw limited scoring opportunities, as the teams combined for just four shots, and the Pack held a 1-0 lead.
Sanchez would find the back of the net himself in the second half, with a pair of scores just 67 seconds apart. Sanchez’s first goal was played out just like Bouemboue’s. After winning the ball, Sanchez looped a shot from 35 yards out into the upper left corner of the Bulldogs goal at the 74:42 mark.
After the ensuing kick, Sanchez working his way into the penalty box and drew a foul. Sanchez converted his second PK of the season at the 75:49 mark.
NC State wrapped up its scoring in the 88th minute. Keeper Christopher Widman played a long ball that Daniel Fish flicked onto Clint Pires along the left sideline. Pires then took the ball into the middle of the field and fed Fish who one-timed the shot into the net for his first goal of the season at the 87:43 mark.
Gardner-Webb would outshoot the Pack on the day, 8-7, but it was Widman in the Pack net who came away with three saves for the shutout.
NC State will have seven days off, before No. 1 Wake Forest comes to town for a contest next Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the NC State Soccer Stadium.
