Wake Forest Beats Volleyball in Four

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. NC State took the opening set but fell in four, 3-1, at Wake Forest on Friday, Oct. 3. The loss sends the Pack to 8-10 (2-1 ACC), while the Demon Deacons climb to 12-4 (3-1 ACC).
Aiwane Iboaya (13) and Arlee Tamietti (10) combined for 23 of State’s 42 kills, while Alex Smith hoisted 35 assists. Iboaya recorded six blocks, while Tamietti (14), Wood (11) and Smith (10) each had double-digit dig totals.
Kadija Fornah led Wake Forest with 16 kills, and Kelsey Jones had 44 set assists. Abby Miller and Megan Thornberry both put up 14 digs, while Natalie Mulliken supplied five blocks.
State’s lone win came in a 19-25 decision in the opening frame. The Pack started on a 1-8 rally before WFU knotted the score at 13-all. A Tamietti kill on the next play put NC State up 13-14, a lead the team would hold until the end of play. The Demon Deacons hit a match-low -.071 throughout the frame and the Pack landed nine kills.
Wake Forest immediately turned things around however, handing the Pack a loss by grabbing the next three sets. The Deacs hit a match-best .429 in a 25-15 second set victory, before coming out on the winning side of a tightly-contested 27-25 win in a third frame that saw seven tied scores.
Six tied scores and three lead changes occurred in the fourth and final stanza before WFU won out. The Pack trailed by just four points very late, but three consecutive Wake Forest strikes ended play at 25-20.
NC State will play at Duke tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
