Terps Come Back for 2-1 Win over Wolfpack
10/26/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
RALEIGH, N.C. Junior Briana Cunningham gave NC State the lead with a goal in the later stages of the first half, but the Wolfpack was unable to hold its advantage in a 2-1 setback to Maryland Sunday afternoon from sunny NC State Soccer Stadium.
Maryland (6-10-1, 2-7 ACC) got its winning goal from Nataly Arias in the 50th minute. After a Wolfpack foul deep in its own end, Caitlin Mcdowell directed a set piece towards the far post from her right flank and Arias one-touched the cross into the lower left corner for her fourth goal of 2008.
Cunningham found the back of the net at 34:31 to give NC State (8-10, 0-8 ACC) the lead. She cleaned up a Gia Cipollini cross from just outside the goal mouth for her first marker of the year.
The advantage was short lived; however, as Aimee Bresani cut through the midfield and unleashed a blast from some 30-yards out into the upper left corner at the 35:35 mark of the first half. The unassisted tally was Bresani’s second of the season.
The Wolfpack continued pressuring the Terrapins end of the field after giving up the lead. Katie Ruiz and Kaitlin Wescoe each had great looks on net from outside the 18-yard box midway through the second stanza. Wescoe’s shot caromed off the right post in the 61st minute.
A few minutes later a beautiful passing combo left freshman Tayna Cain with a great look on net, but Maryland keeper Mary Casey came off her mark to stuff the shot attempt for one of her two saves in the match.
Wolfpack keeper Rachel Barnette was solid again in goal with seven saves and made several timely punch outs to keep the match close.
The Wolfpack hosts Miami on Thursday at 7 pm from NC State Soccer Stadium.
