RALEIGH, N.C. Behind two second-half goals from Jason Herrick, No. 6 Maryland came away with a 2-1 win at NC State Saturday night at the NC State Soccer Stadium. The Terrapins (13-3, 4-2 ACC) scored in the 4th and 25th minutes, and a Wolfpack score in the 33rd minute was not enough to pull out the comeback win.
Maryland would jump on the scoreboard first in just the fourth minute of the game. Jeremy Hall took the ball deep into the left corner and his cross into the NC State penalty box found Jason Herrick for the first score at the 3:04 mark.
Herrick would add his second of the game in the 25th minute. After an NC State foul about 20 yards from goal, the Terps’ Matt Kassel passed the ball into the PK box on the ground, and Kassel ran onto the pass for his second tally of the day at 24:35.
NC State would get on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute. Fresh off the bench, freshman Watt Williams played a long through-ball into the box, and junior Ronnie Bouemboue collected the ball and was immediately fouled and the Pack was awarded a penalty shot. Junior Alan Sanchez converted his fourth PK of the season at the 32:58 mark to cut the lead in half.
Maryland held a 2-1 lead going into the half, with NC state holding a slight 5-4 shot advantage.
The second half was played much like the first, with a minimal amount of shots on goal. Neither team would find the back of the net, and the 2-1 score would hold up.
Maryland won the edge on shots 9-8. NC State’s Christopher Widman made three saves in goal, while the Terps’ Zac MacMath finished with a pair of saves.
The Pack will return to home action this Wednesday night, as NC State will host Longwood at the NC State Soccer Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
