RALEIGH, N.C. Atlantic Coast Conference leading scorer Casey Nogueira found the back of the net four times for No. 2 North Carolina in a 5-0 win over NC State Friday evening at NC State Soccer Stadium.
On an absolute miserable weather night with the temperature hovering in the lower 50’s and the rain coming down in every which way, North Carolina (14-1-1, 7-0-0 ACC) scored four times in just over a 10 minute span in the first half to take control of the match.
Wolfpack keeper Rachel Barnette did as much as she could in the opening 15 minutes to keep the UNC attack at bay. The sophomore from Peachtree City, Ga., hauled in a handful of brilliant stops to keep the match scoreless until Nogueira finally struck in the 18th minute.
Jessica McDonald sent a pass from the right flank and Nogueira skipped a one-touched shot on the wet grass under the outstretched arms of Barnette for the first goal of the match at 17:05.
Allie Long struck about four minutes later when she buried her shot from just outside the goalmouth in the 22nd minute for a 2-0 lead.
Nogueira then took over with two goals on nearly identical plays in a span of 59 seconds. Twice she took a pair of dribbles to her left and put a shot into the lower right corner for a 4-0 advantage that the Tar Heels would take to intermission.
She later added another just over a minute into the second half to cap the evenings scoring.
Barnette and freshman Kim Kern each made eight saves in 45 minutes in net for the Pack.
Ashlyn Harris, Anna Rodenbough and Amanda Tucker each made one save to combine for the UNC shutout.
NC State (8-8, 0-6 ACC) hits the road for the final time in the regular season to play Wake Forest on Thursday in Winston-Salem, N.C. at 7 pm.
