CORAL GABLES, Fla. NC State dropped its first match of the weekend, a 3-0 decision at Miami, on Friday, Oct. 17. The loss sends the Pack to 9-14 (3-5 ACC) on the season, while the Hurricanes climb to 18-2 (6-2 ACC).
Aiwane Iboaya put together solid offensive and defensive efforts, with team-bests in kills (9) and total blocks (4). Alex Smith lifted 22 assists, while Kelly Wood recorded 14 digs.
Lane Carico paced Miami's offense with 12 kills, while Katie Gallagher put up 29 assists and three service aces. Cassie Loessberg contributed 22 digs and Angelica Ellis blocked three attacks.
The Pack started off with its poorest offensive attack of the night, hitting just .094 in a 25-16 first-set loss. The Hurricanes took the opening point and led the entire way, grabbing eight of the first nine scores.
Game two saw State’s most complete effort, a .222 hitting clip and 13 kills, but Miami countered with 13 kills and a .250 attack of its own, downing the Pack 25-20. In a game that saw seven tied scores, the Pack actually led early on, but a four-point Hurricane run put the Pack behind for good at 15-11. State kept things close however, cutting the lead to three at 23-20 and forcing a timeout, but the Canes closed out the frame with back-to-back scores immediately.
Miami hit a match-best .333 in taking the final stanza 25-17. The Pack collected two of the first four scores, but the Canes quickly built a nine-point cushion at 17-8 that State would never overcome.
