RALEIGH, N.C. A spirited late-match rally wasn’t enough for the NC State volleyball team in a 3-1 loss to North Carolina at historic Reynolds Coliseum on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The Pack stormed back in the third set after dropping the first two frames, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
The loss sends State to 9-13 (3-4 ACC) on the year, while the Tar Heels climb to 10-8 (4-3 ACC).
Arlee Tamietti’s 11 kills and two service aces led the Pack, while Alex Smith pushed up 26 assists. Kelly Wood recorded 26 digs, while Lindsay Benac (13), Nikki Sweet (12) and Smith (11) each etched double-digit dig totals of their own. Smith and Tamietti both had four total blocks.
Three North Carolina netters, Lauren Prussing (16), Suzanne Haydel (15) and Heather Brooks (12), combined for 43 of the Tar Heel’s 58 kills. Erica Behm (38 assists) and Stephanie Jansma (10 assists) shared time at setter, while Brianna Eskola collected 33 digs. Christine Vaughen’s seven total blocks was a team-best.
State led early in the first game, but a Courtney Johnston kill gave UNC the lead for good at 6-5. That lead eventually grew to 11 at 25-14 as the Pack hit a match-low -.023 and struggled to put together any type of offensive attack.
UNC nailed 16 kills and just two attack errors for a match-high .341 hitting clip in a second-set decision, 25-16. Several North Carolina mini-runs, including one of five points, kept the Pack’s offense at bay.
Head coach Charita J. Stubbs made some positive adjustments during the 10-minute break prior to the third set, and the Pack certainly responded in clawing out a gritty 23-25 win. Trailing 11-8, State put together a three-point rally to knot the score before eventually grabbing its first lead at 14-15 on a Smith slam. Another three-point run pushed the Pack’s lead to 15-20, which eventually moved to 20-24. It took four tries on set point for State to collect the final tally, which Margaret Salata provided with a strike.
In all, eight tied scores and four lead changes highlighted a topsy-turvy third frame.
It looked like the Pack’s third-set magic was going to force a fifth frame early on in fourth-set play, but it just wasn’t in the cards as the Tar Heels held on for a 25-16 victory. With NC State leading 12-10, UNC scored four-straight to move the score to 12-14 and the Pack wouldn’t lead again.
The volleyball program wishes to thank all of the NC State fans, alums and supporters that came out to cheer on the Pack and participate in the “Dig Pink” event in the fight against breast cancer.
NC State will now hit the road for two ACC bouts over the weekend. The Pack will play at Miami on Friday, Oct. 17, before heading to Florida State on Saturday, Oct. 18. Both matches will start at 7 p.m.
