RALEIGH, N.C. NC State picked up its third ACC win of the season with a 3-1 defeat of Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 11 at historic Reynolds Coliseum. The win pushes the Pack to 9-12 (3-3 ACC), while the Cavaliers dips to 11-8 (3-4 ACC).
Margaret Salata (13) and Isis Gardner (12) led the Wolfpack’s offensive onslaught, nailing 25 of the team’s 56 total kills. Alex Smith pushed up 43 assists, while Aiwane Iboaya recorded seven total blocks. Lindsay Benac and Kelly Wood both put together solid defensive efforts, etching 20 and 19 digs respectively.
Beth Shelton led UVa with 12 kills, while four players put up double-digit dig totals. Kelly Irvin (21 assists) and Marlow Bruneau (15 assists) practically split time at setter.
The Pack won the opening frame, 25-18, for the sixth time in the last seven outings. 16 kills and just four attack errors comprised a match-best .343 hitting clip for State, compared to just seven Cavalier kills. Iboaya was stellar in the opening stanza for the Pack, collecting five kills and two blocks.
Despite hitting a match-low .086 in the second set, UVa was able to down the Pack 23-25. State hit at a match-low of its own, .089, despite mustering 11 kills. NC State trailed by as many as six at 12-18 late in play, later falling to 20-24 before three consecutive Wolfpack scores cut the lead to one.
The Pack bounced back following the 10-minute interlude. Both teams played tit-for-tat volleyball until a Tamietti kill gave State the lead for good at 16-15. NC State led by as many as four at 24-20, before two quick scores eased the blow for the Cavaliers who eventually fell 25-22.
Seven tied scores and three lead changes highlighted a competitive fourth and final frame, with the Pack earning the win with another 25-22 decision. With the score locked at 18-all, a strike from Allyson Weissberg, coupled by consecutive Virginia attack errors, forced the Cavaliers to call a timeout with the Pack up 21-18. Going forward, UVa would score just four more times.
NC State will host rival North Carolina this coming Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m.
