No. 40 W. Tennis Blanks Davidson, 7-0

No. 40 NC State women's tennis wasted little time in routing the Davidson Wildcats Friday night at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. NC State won the doubles point then won all six singles matches in straight sets to improve to 2-0 on the season. Davidson falls to 1-1.
The Wolfpack doubles teams gave NC State an early 1-0 lead in the match with impressive play, especially at the top-2 slots. First off the court was Julia Roach and Lenka Hojckova after the Pack duo took out Fanney/Wang at No. 2, 8-0.
Daria Petrovic and Berkeley Brock quickly secured the doubles point for the Red and White with a convincing 8-3 win at No. 1.
Things were much closer at No. 3 doubles and the Wildcats managed to hold on for the win over Neils Barringer and Kristen Bleakley, 8-6. The Davidson tandem led 4-1 and 6-3, before a furious rally drew NC State to 6-7. Rauh and Whelan were able to break Bleakley's serve to take the decision, 8-6.
Hojckova made quick work of her opponent at No. 3 singles, taking down Kim Whelan, 6-1, 6-3 for a 2-0 Wolfpack lead.
Petrovic would put NC State up 3-0 with the performance of the day. Down 5-3 and serving to stay in the match, Petrovic cranked up her serve to hold, then broke Kelsey Linville to knot the match up at 5-5. She held for a 6-5 lead to force a tiebreak with another huge service game. After winning the tiebreak, 7-4, Petrovic reeled off the final six games, winning 10 of the last 11 to close the match.
The clinching point would come from Brock at No. 2, as she won easily in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
With the match outcome no longer in question, Roach was pushed to a second set tiebreak after winning the opening set at No. 4, 6-3. Roach won the tiebreak easily, however, allowing just one point to her opponent for the win.
Catherine Grotz won at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, and Barringer her match 6-3, 6-2, to wrap up the 7-0 shutout.
NC State returns to action on Feb. 1 against Marshall. The match begins at 5 pm and will be played at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the Andy Andrews Indoor Tennis Stadium.
