RALEIGH, N.C. If North Carolina State men’s golf coach Richard Sykes was looking for a big-time endorsement for the golf course now under construction at the Raleigh-based university, he certainly received it Monday night during the annual Golf Coaches Association of America’s Hall of Fame Awards Dinner at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The final award presented was the GCAA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and the recipient was none other than golfing legend Arnold Palmer.
During Palmer’s acceptance speech, he talked about his days of playing -- and even coaching for one semester -- at Wake Forest. He talked about what an important impact college golf coaches have on young people and the impact it had on him.
He talked about golf in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Then, at one point, he turned, looked over at Sykes, who was at the head table after introducing Palmer, and said, “And believe me, Richard, you are going to have the best golf course in the ACC.”
Now that’s some high praise coming from one of the most respected men in the game.
Of course, Arnie may be a little prejudiced in this manner. What he failed to tell the audience of more than 300 was that Palmer’s company is the one designing and developing the new facility.
