No. 25 Gymnastics Finishes Second at No. 12 Arizona

TUCSON, AZ. - The NC State gymnastics team, ranked No. 25 nationally, narrowly fell on the road to No. 12 Arizona by a margin of just 1.750 and defeated Alaska to finish second in the Wolfpack's first meet of the 2008 season. The Pack, defending EAGL Champions, notched a meet high team score of 49.000 on the vault and finished second in the bars (48.550) and floor (48.200).
Overall, NC State finished with a 192.350 team score, while the No. 12 Wildcats had a 194.100. Alaska was third with a 187.725. The Pack's team score was the highest for a season opener on the road since 1999 and the best opening meet score overall since 2005.
Senior Leigha Hancock posted a meet high score on the vault (9.850) as NC State gymnasts turned in four of the top six scores in the event. Freshman Megan Rowell was second on the team and third overall at the meet with a 9.825. Junior Ashley Shepard and freshman Brittney Hardiman tied for four at the meet with scores of 9.800.
Seniors Kelsey Lee (9.725) and Heather Zolton (9.725) also placed in the top-10 individuals.
Lee led the Pack on the bars with a strong 9.800 to place fourth at the meet in the event. Sophomore Taylor Seaman finished sixth with a 9.750 and fellow sophomore Lauren Deuser was close behind with a 9.725. Hardiman was ninth with a 9.700.
Hancock turned in the top score at the meet on the beam with a 9.875.
Lee and Shepard tied for second overall on the floor exercise as they each posted a 9.750 in the event.
Hardiman finished third in the all-around with a 37.800, just one point off of the top mark at the meet. Zolton was close behind with a 37.625.
The Wolfpack returns to action on January 26 as it travels to No. 20 Ohio State.
