RALEIGH, N.C. NC State dropped its first match of the Holiday Inn Brownstone Volleyball Challenge to East Carolina, 3-1, on Friday, Sept. 7, at Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus. State lost the first two games of the contest, eventually taking the third before the Pirates wrapped up play with a win in the fourth. The loss moves the Pack to 3-5 on the year, while ECU jumps to 4-5.
Lauren Zaniboni led the Pack’s offense with 12 kills and Alex Smith pushed up 45 assists. Smith (13), Megan Rehmer (10) and Chrissy Zirpolo (10) all collected double-digit dig totals, and Jana Angel picked up four block assists.
Overall State’s offense cemented 54 kills, 55 digs, 51 assists and six total blocks while hitting .127. ECU’s scoring attack grabbed 10 more kills and assists, three more blocks and 21 more digs, while putting up a .285 clip.
ECU quieted the highly partisan crowd of 1,389 by taking the first point of game one and eventually increasing its lead to as many as nine points. A four-point rally cut the Pirates lead to 26-23 and forced a timeout, but East Carolina regrouped and allowed just two more Wolfpack scores from that point forward, taking the first frame 30-25.
State had its worst statistical showing in the second game, recording 10 kills and hitting .000, both match-lows. A Smith service error sparked an ECU rally in which the Pirates scored six of eight points, pushing its advantage to 20-14 before play ended at 30-21.
With its back against the wall, the Pack had its best game in the third frame, scoring match-highs in kills (18) and hitting percentage (.302). Both teams exchanged several leads throughout the affair, but a Janay Yancey kill put NC State on top for good at 23-22, clearing the path for an eventual 28-30 Wolfpack win.
Anxious to put the match away, East Carolina stormed out of the gates in the fourth and final game, crushing 19 kills and hitting .400, both match-highs. With the score knotted at 6-6, the Pirates reeled off nine of 11 points and never looked back, hanging on for a 30-18 decision.
NC State will play two more matches tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 8, taking on Dartmouth at 12 p.m., and Akron at 7 p.m.
