COLLEGE PARK, Md. NC State volleyball took the opening game against Maryland but ultimately fell, 3-1, on Saturday, Sept. 29, in College Park, Md. The Pack moves to 3-12 (0-5 ACC) on the year with the loss, while the Terps improve to 10-4 (2-3 ACC).
Keri DeMar led the Wolfpack offense with 13 kills, and Chrissy Zirpolo knocked 10. Alex Smith pushed up 26 of the team’s 37 assists, and Lindsay Benac (14) and Nikki Sweet (12) tallied 26 digs combined. Six Wolfpackers recorded blocks, with Aiwane Iboaya scoring a team-high five. The red and white laid down five services aces and 10 total team blocks.
Jade Brown and Beth Gillming both scored 15 digs for Maryland, and Mary Beth Brown added 11. Hayle Hanson had 27 assists, and Bethany Springer recorded 21 digs. Four Terps each grabbed a service ace, and the team tallied 15 total blocks.
In all, Maryland out-hit NC State .231 to .081.
State hit at a .263 clip in the opening round, taking the game 26-30. The Pack led briefly in the second frame, but four-consecutive errors gave Maryland a 7-5 advantage that it never relented en route to its 30-25 decision.
“Our passing really broke down in the second game, and it definitely cost us,” said head coach Charita J. Stubbs.
The red and white rebounded from a loss in game two to hold a 24-19 lead late in the third stanza. The Terps, however, didn’t back down. With the score knotted at 29-all, Jade Brown landed a kill, followed by a Maryland block that sealed the deal on a 31-29 victory.
Stubbs summoned the Pack for a timeout conference twice in the fourth and final contest, but State was never able to get anything going, falling 30-16.
NC State will return home to host two league showdowns next week. The Pack will take on Duke next Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m., before welcoming Wake Forest on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. Both matches will take place at historic Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus.
