Late Volleyball Rally Falls Short Against Clemson

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State fell to Clemson, 3-0, at Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus in Raleigh on Friday, Sept. 21. The Tigers took the opening two games before a spirited State run fell just short in the third frame. With the loss the Pack falls to 3-9 (0-2 ACC) on the season, while Clemson climbs to 8-2 (1-0 ACC).
Keri DeMar led the Wolfpack offense with 11 kills, while Lauren Zaniboni and Chrissy Zirpolo both added 10. Allison Davis lifted 19 assists, Lindsay Benac grabbed 14 digs, and the team collected six total blocks. State failed to score a service ace throughout play for the first time on the year.
Meghan Steiner’s 14 kills paced the Tigers assault, and Kelsey Murphy tossed up 34 assists. Didem Ege etched 13 digs, and four different players recorded service aces.
Clemson took the first three points of the opening game and quickly sprinted to a 10-3 advantage. State called a timeout trailing 21-12, but the Tigers grabbed nine of the next 15 points for a 30-18 decision.
CU grabbed 14 kills and hit .235 compared to the Pack’s -.030 clip, taking the second frame 30-14. Down 10 points at 22-12, State talked things over on the sidelines, but Clemson refused to wilt, only giving up two more points in the game.
State was in control for the majority of the third and final game, leading by as many as four points. Clemson couldn’t seem to get to within closer than three points of the Pack’s lead until a Zirpolo attack error knotted the score at 24-all. A Davis attack error gave the Tigers its first lead of the game at 30-29, and a Jeannette Abbott strike on the next play ended the evening at 31-29.
