Raleigh, N.C. The NC State men’s soccer team dropped its ACC conference opener, 1-0, to rival North Carolina Saturday afternoon at Method Road. In a defensive stalemate that saw only three combined shots on goal, the Tar Heels (2-1-2, 1-0 ACC) scored the game’s lone goal in the 73rd minute and recorded the shutout over the Wolfpack (3-2-1, 0-1 ACC).
The winning goal came in the 73rd minute of action. Ryan Johnson collected a loose ball close to the NC State endline in the right corner of the field. Johnson dribbled into the penalty box, and found teammate Bill Dworsky around the six-yard box for the goal at the 72:12 mark.
The Tar Heels held a 11-6 shot advantage. UNC’s Tyler Deric recorded one save for the shutout, while NC State’s Christopher Widman made one save as well.
NC State will have a week off, before facing nationally ranked Virginia next Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Method Road.
