RALEIGH, N.C. Despite taking rival North Carolina to the wire in two of three games on Friday, Sept. 14 at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, the NC State volleyball team ultimately came up short and dropped its conference opener, 3-0. With the loss the Pack falls to 3-8 (0-1 ACC) on the year, while the Tar Heels improve to 5-5 (1-0 ACC).
Attendance was listed at 1,983, a season-high for State on its historic home court.
Lauren Zaniboni led the Pack with 10 kills, and Keri DeMar was right behind her with nine. Alex Smith offered 26 assists, while Andi Bentley (12), Chrissy Zirpolo (11) and Lindsay Benac (10) combined for 33 digs. Three Wolfpackers, Bentley, Megan Rehmer and Jana Angel, scored service aces, and the team posted eight total blocks.
UNC, which out-hit the Pack .178 to .030 on the evening, collected kills from every which way. Sue Haydel had a team-best 10, while Lauren Prussing (9), Heather Brooks (8), Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland (8) and Christine Vaughen (8) contributed to the assault. Stephanie Jansma tossed in 37 assists and the Tar Heels record 12 team blocks.
Carolina grabbed the first point of the night on a Haydel kill in game one, but State made the Tar Heels work hard for its 30-25 decision to start things off. Trailing 18-12 the Pack reeled off four straight to shrink the lead to two points. But with the scoreboard reading 21-19, UNC took six of seven scores, pushing its lead back to seven before wrapping things up on a Brooks kill.
State fell behind by as many as seven points early on in the second frame, but trimmed the lead to three points at 17-14 on a DeMar kill. A Brianna Eskola service error put the Pack a single tally away at 21-20, but Carolina took the next three points. State pulled back to within two, 26-24, on a Prussing attack error late in the contest. Carolina, however, didn’t relent, taking four-straight to claim a 2-0 lead, 30-24.
Despite leading early on in game three, State dropped the final stanza, 30-20. With the score knotted at 13-all, UNC used a six-point run to claim a 19-13 advantage and never looked back.
NC State will return to the court next weekend, hosting both Clemson and Georgia Tech as ACC play continues. The Pack will take on the Tigers at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, before hosting the Yellow Jackets at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23.
