DURHAM, N.C. NC State collected its second win of the day, Saturday, Aug. 25, with a 3-1 decision over Loyola College in its final match at the NC Central Tournament in Durham, N.C. With the win, the Pack moves to 3-1 on the season and already eclipses its win total from a year ago when the squad went 2-29.
The Pack took the first game (30-26), before faltering in the second (24-30). As was the case earlier this morning in its victory over Campbell, State withstood early troubles to come back and take frames three (30-23) and four (30-20).
Second year head coach Charita J. Stubbs was pleased with what she saw.
“I’m very happy with the way that we played this weekend,” said Stubbs. “We kept up our enthusiasm the entire time, and we played as a team.
“What we are doing right now is good,” said Stubbs. “The youth has caught up with us in certain areas, but overall I am pleased. Obviously there are several things that we need to work on and we will address that starting Monday.”
Lauren Zaniboni continued a stellar introductory weekend to college play with a team-best 19 kills, while Megan Remer added 12. Janay Yancey contributed five blocks, two of which were solo, while libero Nikki Sweet grabbed 23 digs. Speedy setter Alex Smith secured 38 assists, 10 digs, two service aces and a solo block.
“Lauren played phenomenal all weekend,” said Stubbs. “She stepped up every time we needed her.”
In all, the Wolfpack looked much more athletic throughout the course of the first weekend of the season. According to Stubbs, however, the team unity and chemistry is what’s really having the greatest impact.
“The players are competing together and playing as a team 100% of the time,” said Stubbs. “The team is playing as an actual team, not a group of individuals. They did a great job of bouncing back from every tough situation, and what’s best is that they did it all together.”
State will resume play next weekend at the University of Florida Tournament in Gainesville, Fla., taking on Santa Clara, host Florida and Georgia Southern.
