Men's Soccer Draws With #1 UCLA 2-2

Raleigh, N.C. Playing in front of a packed house at Method Road Soccer Stadium, the NC State men’s soccer team gave the fans an exciting game, as the Wolfpack tied preseason No. 1 UCLA 2-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins, last years NCAA runner-up, scored first in the 11th minute only to be answered by the Pack in the 28th minute. UCLA would again climb up by a goal in the 44th minute, but shortly after in the 49th minute NC State tied the game once again. Each team then went scoreless in the final 40 minutes, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
The contest was played in three, 30 minute halves with no overtime.
UCLA got on the scoreboard first at the 10:32 mark. Jason Leopoldo stole the ball on the right wing, and dribbled around until he found himself free from about 20 yards out, and fired a shot into the top right hand corner of the net.
The Wolfpack had a chance to tie in the 16th minute, when the Pack was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box. Alan Sanchez’s shot was saved by a diving Brian Perk, and kept the Pack off the scoreboard.
NC State would find the back of the net at the 27:44 mark. The pack was awarded a free kick from about 22 yards out. Sanchez slid the ball over to senior El Hadj Cisse, and he fired a low blast into the corner of the net to tie the game up.
NC State’s Christopher Widman started the contest and played the first 30 minutes. Widman finished with a team-high three saves.
The Bruins would once again find the advantage on the scoreboard in the 44th minute. Michael Stephens crossed the ball into the box, and found Kyle McAthy unmarked for the goal at the 43:46 mark.
NC State would answer right back, scoring less than five minutes later. Junior Clint Pires played a low cross into the Bruin’s box, and after the ball bounced around some, sophomore Ben Ward found the loose ball and slotted home the tying goal at the 48:26 mark.
In the net for the Pack, Tom DeStefano played the second 30 minutes.
Neither team scored a goal in the final 30 minutes, as the heat got to both teams forcing both coaches to use most of their subs. Freshman Brandyn Bumpas did record once save for the Pack in the net.
NC State finished with the advantage in shots, 12-10.
The Wolfpack will begin the regular season this weekend, hosting the annual Wolfpack Classic. NC State battles Valparaiso on Friday at 2:00 p.m., then Delaware on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
