DURHAM, N.C. NC State picked up its first loss of the season on Friday, Aug. 24, at the NC Central Tournament in Durham, N.C., falling to the host Eagles, 3-2, in the nightcap. The Pack took the first two games and seemed destined to pick up its second win of the day, before a late surge in front of the partisan crowd helped propel NCCU to a nail biting win. With the loss, NC State falls to 1-1 on the season, while the NC Central climbs to 2-0.
Lauren Zaniboni (22) and Megan Rehmer (16) both posted double-digit kill totals, as Alex Smith lifted 42 assists. Lindsay Benac collected 25 digs.
The Pack took the first frame 30-22 thanks in part to four Amber Spolarich kills and an ace from Nikki Sweet. NCCU started off on a 3-0 run before the Wolfpack rallied to take control for good at 7-6 on a Spolarich kill.
State’s offense ran fairly smoothly in the first game, and that continued well into the second. Both squads traded blows until Rehmer gave the Pack a permanent lead at 9-8 on a decisive kill. From that point on, it was all Wolfpack as the team’s lead grew to nine points before play ended at 30-23.
As cohesive as the team appeared to play during the two opening games, youth and fatigue set in the minute game three started. State led early and often until the score became knotted at 17, and then the Eagles reeled off seven-straight points to stage a 24-17 advantage, eventually winning at 30-19. The Wolfpack hit -.140 during the game, a match low.
The Pack never led in the fourth game, as NC Central grabbed a young lead and cruised along for a 30-25 win.
The fifth and final game began with both teams playing tit-for-tat volleyball and exchanging points seemingly after each serve. State posted a .364 hitting clip, a match high, as opposed to NCCU’s .292. Janay Yancey gave the Pack a late lead with a kill to move the score to 13-12, but the Eagles grabbed the next three points for a 15-13 victory.
NC State will return to the court tomorrow, Saturday, August 25, for its final two matches at the NC Central Tournament. State will take on Campbell at 9 a.m., before facing Loyola at 1 p.m.
