RALEIGH, N.C. - Four-year letterwinner and Wolfpack softball cornerstone Shaina Ervin has been tabbed as the new pitching coach at UNC Greensboro as announced by Spartans head coach Jennifer Herzig on Wednesday, August 22. Ervin becomes the second former State player to take a coaching job at the Division I level as fellow teammate hurler Abbie Sims took the reigns of the pitching corps at Houston last week.
"I'm excited for Shaina to begin her coaching career," said Wolfpack head coach Lisa Navas. "It’s a great opportunity to help UNC Greensboro continue in their success as a program.
"Shaina has always been a student of the game," said Navas. "She will make a great coach."
The 2006 ACC Tournament MVP, Ervin carried a 1.81 ERA over 708 innings of work in a red and white uniform. She stands second in program history for wins (55), appearances (124), starts (105), complete games (72), shutouts (19), and strikeouts (704). Throughout her stellar career, the Huntersville, N.C., native held opposing batters to a miniscule .208 clip.
Named first-team All-ACC in 2006, Ervin was also named to the NFCA All-Region second-team in 2005. Her pitching down the stretch of the 2006 league championship propelled the Wolfpack to capture its first ACC title. As a freshman in 2004, she tossed no-hitters in back-to-back appearances against Binghamton and Campbell. As a junior is 2006, she went undefeated in conference play.
Shaina also excelled in the classroom, having been named to the ACC Honor Roll four times, in addition to being a 2004 NFCA Scholar Athlete Award Recipient. She collected an ACC Postgraduate Scholarship last season.
Although her skills shined brightly in the circle, she was an able contributor at the plate, pounding out 63 hits, seven home runs and 39 RBIs.
Since graduating from NC State with a degree in parks, recreation and tourism management with a concentration in sports management, Ervin has been competing with the Michigan Ice pro fastpitch team alongside twin sister and former State player Miranda Ervin.
