What NC State basketball fan doesn’t dream of playing in Reynolds Coliseum on Legendary Coach Kay Yow’s Court? For Lauren Phillips and Sidney Shepheard, this was a dream come true! For the entire 2006-07 NC State women’s basketball season, Sweet Tomatoes ran an enter-to-win contest at its Cary and Raleigh locations with a chance for two winners to receive a scholarship to Coach Kay Yow Camp. Lauren and Sidney were this season’s lucky winners!
Kay Yow Camp runs for three sessions during the summer and is attended by young ladies from 3rd grade to high school. The first session is an overnight camp for the high school attendees and concentrates on team-oriented skills. The other two sessions are for attendees between 3rd and 8th grade. These sessions concentrate on improving individual skills such as shooting, dribbling, and passing. The camp coordinator is Kristen Gillespie, a former NC State standout. She is assisted by the NC State Women’s Basketball coaching staff and other current and former NC State players. The highlight of each session is an inspiring speech from NC State head coach Kay Yow!
The first session winner of the Sweet Tomatoes Kay Yow Camp Scholarship was Lauren Phillips. She is 8 years old and will be in the fourth grade. Lauren has been playing basketball since she was 5 and her favorite position is shooting guard. During her camp session she hoped to improve her basketball game so she could beat her brother and sister. Lauren’s favorite part about camp was playing basketball all day and meeting new friends. She loves to eat ice cream and watch her favorite TV show, Hannah Montana. In her free time, Lauren likes to play with her friends. Lauren is a huge Wolfpack Women’s Basketball fan, and she wanted to end this interview by saying, “Go Wolfpack!”
The second session winner of the Sweet Tomatoes Kay Yow Camp Scholarship was Sidney Shepheard. She is 8 years old and will be in the fourth grade. She has been playing basketball for three years and her favorite position is shooting guard. During the Kay Yow Camp, Sidney hopes to improve her shooting skills. Sidney’s favorite part of camp is lunch because of the ice cream buffet, and she also enjoys the game competitions on the court. When asked about Sidney’s favorite team, she responded, “I think it’s obvious. I love NC State!” Her favorite sports moment was meeting Julius Hodge and getting her NC State #24 jersey signed. Sidney likes to eat ice cream and watch her favorite TV show, Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Sidney’s dream will come true later this week when she gets to meet Coach Yow.
Playing on Kay Yow Court in Reynolds Coliseum with current and former NC State players is truly a dream come true for all the campers. As this year’s Kay Yow Camps come to end, Kristen Gillespie and her camp staff have taught these young ladies about teamwork and commitment. And thanks to Sweet Tomatoes for allowing Lauren and Sidney’s dream to come true!
