Lauren Doughtie Reaches Virginia Amateur Final

RICHMOND NC State rising junior Lauren Doughtie posted a pair of wins Thursday and will compete in Friday’s 18-hole final at the 82nd Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship at The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course (5,781 yards, par 36-3672).
The Suffolk, Va., native will take on Sarah Harvey in both players first finals’ appearance, which begins at 8:50 am on Friday.
Each of the four quarterfinal matches went to the 18th hole. Doughtie posted a 1-up victory over former James Madison University standout Carol Green in the morning, before besting Heather McGinnis 5 and 4 in the semis.
Meanwhile, Harvey, a sophomore at Harvard, got past University of Virginia senior and 2006 event finalist Kristen Simpson, 1 up in quarters action and recorded a 3 and 2 win over Shelley Savage in the semis.
In the quarters, Doughtie and Green staged one of the best matches of the day. On the outward half, Doughtie won three straight holes from Nos. 7-9 to build a 3-up lead at the turn. But Green answered with three consecutive wins of her own on the back nine, knocking in 5 and 12-foot birdie putts at Nos. 11 and 12 before taking No. 13 with a concession to square the match.
After holing an important 7-foot putt for par to keep the match all square at the par-3 14th, Doughtie went 1 up with a par at the dogleg left par-4 15th hole. There, Green missed the green right with her second shot and narrowly misfired on a 12-foot uphill par attempt. Doughtie remained 1 up going to the uphill par-5 18th, where she used her length to hit the green in two. She left her 16-foot eagle attempt right of the hole short, but drained a 5-footer for birdie to end the match with Green’s ball lying just a sliver inside of her for birdie.
“It was a battle and one of the toughest matches I think I’ve played in,” said Doughtie, who established the Wolfpack’s single-season scoring record in 2006-07. “I knew I needed to stay patient and wait for it come back in my direction and if [Carol] outplays me, she outplays me.”
Seemingly still riding the momentum from her morning victory, Doughtie built a 2-up lead over McGinnis through five holes and then reeled off four birdies in a five-hole stretch from Nos. 6-10 to build a 6-up advantage. The run was highlighted by sticking a 5-iron to three feet at the demanding uphill par-3 eighth hole.
Harvey rode a hot putter in reaching the finals. She built a 2-up lead at the turn on Simpson in the morning session and knocked in a clutch 4-footer for par at No. 18 to reach the semis.
The finalists have known each other since their junior golf days going back to their early-teen years. They played in the stroke play qualifying round together earlier this week and Doughtie faced Sarah’s sister, Misha, in the second round of match play, registering a 4 and 3 victory.
