RICHMOND, Va. Lauren Doughtie is now one of only eight golfers remaining at the 82nd Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship.
Doughtie, a rising junior on the NC State women’s golf team moved into Thursday’s quarterfinals with a 4 & 3 victory over No. 10 seed Misha Harvey, a rising senior at William & Mary on Wednesday.
Doughtie, the No. 7 seed, was 1 up after 10 holes and went on to record three wins in a four-hole stretch (Nos. 11, 13 and 15) to help set the final 4 and 3 margin.
The victory sets up a quarterfinal match with Carol Green, the defending champion and Doughtie knows another tough match waits.
“I’m looking forward to it. I’ve never met Carol in match play,” Doughtie said. “It’s going to be a fun match, a good match. I wouldn’t ask for anything different. She’s playing really well.”
The medalist at last year’s championship, Doughtie fell in the second round of 2006, but counts it as a learning experience that has helped her develop as she faces some more tough matches.
“Last year helped me as a player,” said the long-hitting Doughtie. “If you don’t get tested until the end, you’re going to struggle at the end.”
Doughtie registered a 4 and 3 win over No. 26 Shawn McCullough in the opening round on Tuesday.
The quarterfinals and semifinals are Thursday, July 12, followed by the 18-hole championship final on Friday, July 13.
