Dallas Poulk was not NC State’s most highly touted freshman when the 2007 season began, but by the end of the year he was the Wolfpack’s best player, its leadoff hitter, offensive catalyst and a defensive stalwart in the middle of the infield.
Collegiate Baseball magazine and Louisville Slugger certainly noticed Poulk’s freshman campain and on Wednesday named Poulk to their 2007 Freshman All-America team.
Poulk certainly merited Freshman All-America honors. He led NC State with a .394 batting average, second highest in school history by a freshman (Tommy Crocker hit .398 in 1976), and chipped in eight doubles, four triples, a home run, 33 runs scored, 26 RBIs, seven stolen bases and exceptional glovework at second base. He was second on the team with a .506 slugging percentage and a .441 on-base percentage.
Poulk made an immediate impact when he moved into the starting lineup March 14 vs. Valparaiso, but his biggest contribution came when head coach Elliott Avent moved the Fayetteville, N.C., rookie to the leadoff spot in the NC State batting order. In 16 games at the top of the lineup card, Poulk batted .465 (33-for-71) with two doubles, three triples, one home run, four stolen bases and 13 runs scored. In those 16 games, he led the team in batting, slugging percentage (.620), on-base percentage (.525), hits (33), triples (3) and total bases (44).
Poulk is NC State’s 14th Freshman All-American and its first since Joey Devine and Michael Rogers in 2003.
