Offense Carries Baseball Over Campbell, 12-4

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State used 16 hits, three of which were long balls, to cruise past Campbell, 12-4, on Friday, May 4, at Doak Field at Dail Park. Dallas Poulk, Ryan Pond and Mike Roskopf each grabbed three hits, while seven total players collected RBIs. Sam Brown (1-0) earned his first win of the season in five innings of work, while Justin Lilly (0-6) took the loss. With the victory the Pack moves to 30-16 on the season, while the Camels fall to 10-37.
The Pack staged an early lead by putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the opening frame. Ramon Corona and Jeremy Synan reached on one-out back-to-back infield singles. Roskopf followed with another infield base hit to short, and Corona came around to score when Robb Meng’s throw to first sailed out of reach. Caleb Mangum then sent Synan across the plate with an RBI single through the left side.
Carlton Floyd tied things up for the Camels with a two-run jack to right-center in the top of the third. Mike Causey took first on a single to short to get things started, and then moved to second on a John Watlington sac-bunt. Floyd followed by going yard for the second time on the season, knotting the score at 2-2.
State responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring six runs on six hits and batting around to take control of the ball game. Pond sent a base hit up the middle and scored on a Roskopf double that drilled the top of the wall in left-center. Mangum followed with his second single, and Pat Ferguson kept the offense rolling with an RBI single into right. Mangum later scored on a wild pitch, and Poulk brought in two mores runs with a base hit into left. Corona added the Pack’s sixth run of the inning with another RBI single into left.
Blake Herring took over on the mound for the Camels in the bottom of the fourth, allowing two hits, including a two-run dinger to Roskopf that cleared the wall in right-center.
Pond drove the first pitch in the bottom of the sixth over the wall in left-center, moving the score to 11-2.
Two Campbell runs shortened State’s lead in the top of the seventh. Watlington grabbed an RBI single to third and Floyd pushed in another run with a fielder’s choice to first.
Payne added the Pack’s third home run of the game, a solo shot to left, in the bottom of the seventh.
Joey Cutler took the ball in the eighth for the Pack and finished the game, fanning the last five batters he faced.
NC State and Campbell will return to work tomorrow, Saturday, May 5, with a 2 p.m. affair at Doak Field at Dail Park.
