RALEIGH, N.C. Spotty weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the 69 NC State student-athletes and their parents and family that participated in Saturday’s commencement exercises. Their graduation day began at 7:15 a.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium’s Vaughn Towers at an athletics department-sponsored breakfast for the student-athletes and their families.
Each of the spring graduates received a small gift, a red sash to wear over their graduation gowns and a folder full of real-world information to get them started on their life after college from Student-Athlete Development and Community Relations Director Tonya Washington. Academic Support for Student-Athletes Director Phil Moses greeted everyone and beckoned the graduates to enjoy the day “until your face hurts from smiling, until you can’t lift your arms to give one more hug.”
Senior associate athletics director David Horning congratulated the student-athletes on joining the five percent of the world’s population to own a college degree.
Finally, swimmer Melissa Jamerino spoke on behalf of all student-athletes about the experiences they shared during their athletics and academic careers at NC State, from study hall and dining hall antics to their worries and hopes for the future. Among the head coaches in attendance were men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe, new football coach Tom O’Brien, men’s soccer coach George Tarantini, women’s soccer coach Laura Kerrigan, volleyball coach Charita J. Stubbs, wrestling coach Carter Jordan and men’s and women’s swimming coach Brooks Teal.
