Women's Golf Earns Sixth Straight NCAA Appearance
4/30/2007 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
NC State’s invitation marks the sixth-straight trip to the championship and a sixth appearance in seven seasons since the program was reinstated in 2000 following a 15-year layoff.
The East regional will take place Thursday, May 10 through Saturday, May 12 at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La. Louisiana State University will serve as host for the event.
Certainly no stranger to the course, NC State placed 11th among 21 competing teams in mid-May at the highly competitive 2007 LSU/Cleveland Classic. Sophomore Lauren Doughtie posted her second top-10 finish of the year, placing in a tie for eighth at +3 (72-72-75=219).
Doughtie leads NC State with an 18-hole scoring average of 76.1, which includes a second-place finish at the Wildcat Fall Invitational and five top-20 finishes overall. Always a consistent performer for the Pack, all 26 of Doughtie’s rounds this year were counted.
Freshman Emily Street started all five spring tournaments for the Wolfpack and wound up with a 77.0 stroke average. She was the Pack’s top finisher in the final two tournaments, including a tie for 15th at the ACC Championship. Street also fired the clubs best round of the year with a three-under 69 during the third round of the Bryan National Collegiate.
Also scheduled to play in the NCAA East regional will be junior Stephanie Derrey and freshman Kathleen Strandberg. Derrey has compiled a 78.0 stroke average over nine tournaments with a pair of top-20 finishes. Meanwhile, Strandberg has had an up-and-down first season with the Wolfpack. She owns a 78.9 stroke average over seven tournaments. She recorded a top-5 finish at the Pinehurst Challenge and a 14th place showing at the Wildcat Fall Invitational.
Freshman Joanna Saleeby rounds out a young Wolfpack squad that will feature three freshmen, one sophomore and one junior.
Joining NC State is ACC foes Duke (No. 1), North Carolina (6), Wake Forest (8), Virginia (10) and Florida State (11) in the East regional field.
The three-day event houses a 54-hole tournament featuring a total of 63 teams and nine individuals. Of the 324 total participants, 126 will advance to the championship. The top eight teams, plus the top two individuals not on those teams, will advance to the 26th Annual NCAA Championship May 22-25 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
