Last night at the NC State All-Sports Banquet, women's soccer player Michelle Crocker Massey was named the recipient of the 2006-07 Kay Yow Award.
This annual award is given to the female student-athlete who best exemplifies outstanding academic achievement, athletic achievement, community service, and a true spirit of teamwork. It is named for NC State's Head Basketball Coach Kay Yow, who is beloved and respected across the nation for all she has done in coaching and in life.
Massey overcame no less than four knee surgeries starting in her senior year of high school to go on to be captain and four-time MVP of the Wolfpack soccer team.
She was named to the 2006 NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-South Region team and the All-Academic ACC Team. She graduated summa cum laude with double major in Mathematics and Mathematics Education in May 2006 and has been accepted into a nursing program post graduation.
She was a volunteer tutor of mathematics at Millbrook High School and for the Volunteer for the We Build People Campaign at the YMCA, while also participating in teaching free soccer clinics to youth players.
Women's Soccer coach Laura Kerrigan stated, "Michelle is the model student-athlete. She put 100% of herself into everything she did here - academics, athletics, teamwoork and all-around citizenship. I can't think of another athlete who better exemplifies the qualities of Coach Yow."
