RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 45 NC State lost for the first time this season when winning the doubles point in a tough loss to No. 11 North Carolina Thursday afternoon. The Wolfpack's Daria Petrovic and Alejandra Guerra defeated the No. 3 ranked doubles team nationally at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point and Guerra also won at No. 3 singles in the match. North Carolina (19-7 overall, 7-3 ACC) won five of the six matches to down NC State (12-9 overall, 3-7 ACC).
NC State took an early lead in the match with a strong showing in doubles. The Pack jumped out to early leads on all three courts as Green and Roach got things rolling with a big 8-4 win over the nationally ranked duo from UNC, Collins and Marand.
Guerra and Petrovic continued their recent dominance at No. 1 doubles, as they defeated the No. 3 doubles tandem nationally to secure the doubles point for the Pack. It was the tandem's second win in the last three matches against a top-10 nationally ranked doubles team.
Alejandra Guerra would give the Pack a 2-0 lead with a quick dismissal of Caitlin Collins at No. 3. Guerra breezed through her match, 2 and 2, to put NC State up early in singles.
North Carolina would bounce back by winning at No. 4 and No. 5 singles to even the match at 2-2.
After Kristen Bleakley fell at No. 6, Daria Petrovic (No. 1 singles) and Berkeley Brock (No. 2 singles) kept the Wolfpack in the match by battling until the end. Petrovic fell in her second set, 7-5, to allow the Heels to escape with the team win.
NC State will return to action for the final regular season match on Saturday, April 14 at noon against No. 18 Duke at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
