RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State softball team will welcome in-state rival East Carolina for two games on Wednesday, March 28, at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Pack and Pirates will get things started at 3 p.m., with the second contest slated for 5 p.m. State leads the all-time series between the two programs 4-0. Live stats will be available via GoPack.com.
NC State stands at 22-13 (3-3 ACC) after taking one of three games from No. 20 Georgia Tech over the past weekend in Atlanta, Ga. The Wolfpack's bats were alive and well for the most part against the Yellow Jackets, pounding out 20 runs on 25 hits. State also crushed eight long balls with Jen Chamberlin and Abbie Sims both mailing two out of the park. Shanna Smith, Heather Gelbard, Allison Presnell and Miranda Ervin all went yard as well.
Chamberlin, the active leader in ACC career home runs, stands second all-time with 43 dingers. She needs just three more to tie all-time leader Tara Knudsen of Georgia Tech for the lead.
On the diamond, State continues to be the best fielding team in the league, ranking first among all ACC squads with a .973 fielding percentage.
East Carolina enters the series at 25-10 (4-2 Conference USA). The Pirates have won five of its last seven games, sweeping Akron, UNC Greensboro and taking one of three games from Marshall. NC State lost to Marshall, 6-5, earlier in the season on Feb. 16 in its first game at the Cox Communications Classic in Gainesville, Fla. The Pack, however, rallied back from the loss to win the tournament, taking four-straight games including two over No. 19 Florida on its home field.
Hurler Toni Paisley (9-3 / 1.48 ERA) tossed a no-hitter for ECU against UNCG on March 22, fanning 11 batters. Paisley had previously thrown a perfect game against Binghamton on March 3. Keli Harrell (14-5) leads the Pirates pitching rotation with a 1.35 ERA, while Brooke Swan (2-2 / 2.47 ERA) rounds out the staff.
ECU features three batters hitting over .300, with Jessica Johnson leading the way on a .427 clip. She leads the team with seven home runs and 38 hits in 89 at-bats.
The Pirates have been solid in the field, committing just 23 errors in the 35 games, good for a .976 fielding percentage.
Following Wednesday's action the Wolfpack will return to the road this coming weekend for another ACC showdown at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. The two teams will collide at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, before wrapping up play on Sunday, April 1, at 1 p.m.
