Track Wins Two Races in the Sprints

Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State track and field squads were back in action this weekend, sending its sprinters and field eventers to compete at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill. The women’s team brought home two first-place finishes in the sprints.
Joya Rodgers won the 60 meters with a season-best time of 7.55, while Cassandra Williams was first in the 200 meters also running a season-best 25.58.
Mattie Bethea placed in the top-five in two of the jumps, clearing 5’06” for third in the high jump, and she was also fifth in the long jump (17’08.25”).
The Wolfpack men’s team was very successful in Friday’s meet, as two different athletes either broke or tied their own school records.
Mitchell Pope once again broke the school record in the shot put. Pope, who earlier this season broke a school record that stood since 1977, established a new NC State record with a heave of 64’08.75”, which was more than six inches better than his previous best. That mark is another NCAA automatic mark, and is currently the third best nationally during the indoor season. Pope was also second in the weight throw with a toss of 57’11.25”
NC State had the top four finishers in the weight throw. Chris Crawford won the event for the third time this season with a throw of 58’02”. Jason Jones was third (51’09”) and Stephen Dickens was fourth (47’09.25”).
Freshman A’Tolani Akinkuotu also etched his name in the NC State record books with his performance. Akinkuotu tied his own school record in the 60 meters, when he placed second with a time of 6.76. Also in that race, Reggie Reese was fourth (6.92) and Omar Wells was sixth (6.94).
In the jumps, Dexter Adams won the triple jump with a top leap of 47’05.25”. In the high jump, Michael Hill was third as he cleared 6’06”, and Eric Davis was firth (6’04”).
The NC State men’s team will have three distance runners compete in the Husky Classic in Washington on Saturday.
