Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State gymnastics team will head to North Carolina, to compete against the Tar Heels, George Washington, James Madison and Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Senior Katie Ozburn took the time to write about what she thought about last weekends performance in the Governor’s Cup, and what the Pack has been doing in practice this week.
Ozburn: Friday’s meet against the University of North Carolina, University of Maryland and Towson University was full of energy and team unity. Although we knew we were competing against all three schools, especially Carolina, we were reminded to focus on our own meet. Success on one event at a time would bring us a victory, and sure enough that is just what happened. We had a strong start on vault with high scores from junior Leigha Hancock and senior Rachel Katz.
The energy stayed high as we moved to bars. To be completely honest I was a little nervous about the outcome on bars. Warm ups were not as dynamic as they normally are; but the bar team shocked and amazed me with their season high score of 48.725. Senior Amanda Jones certainly set the tone for the rest of the season with her high score of a 9.8, a win on the event.
Balance beam is an even that requires a lot of focus, confidence and determination. Confidence grew with each routine and the crowd kept the energy flowing. It was awesome hearing the “wolf” “pack” chant overpower the chant of “tar” “heels” from the Carolina fans at the meet.
There is nothing better than a home meet and the advantage of finishing on the floor exercise. It is the event that the crowd really has the ability to get into because of the music. They gymnast gets to show her personality and style and everyone has a good time. Friday night was exactly this. Up to this point we had three successful events and we were not about to give it up. Each member of the floor team tumbled high, and danced with pizzazz and smiled big. Freshman Taylor Seaman always gets the crowds attention with her floor routine and she did just that on Friday, scoring a 9.825.
After the exciting big finish on Friday, we are looking forward to traveling to Carolina this Sunday and attempt to beat them at their home arena. This week we will work on polishing our routines and skills. The team energy and unity is something unique to our team that brings us together and makes each win bigger and better.
