As the warm air begins to filter in through the Carolina’s, golf begins for many in the region. The NC State women’s golf team is no exception.
Having not played a collegiate tournament since before Halloween, the Wolfpack golfers are eager to pull its favorite club out of the bag and get the spring season underway.
As the team begins its assault on a fifth straight NCAA Regional berth, NC State opens the spring at the 2007 Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Coco Beach Resort in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The tournament is a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes each day running Friday, Feb. 23rd through Sunday, Feb. 25th.
Seventh-year head coach Page Marsh is anticipating a successful spring season, hoping to build off a steady fall campaign that saw the team shoot competitive scores at each tournament they entered.
The team competed in four fall events, placing among the top-nine in each tournament. The Pack was solid and steady for three rounds at the Wildcat Fall Invitational and it paid off, as the team finished third in the field. Sophomore Lauren Doughtie finished tied for second in the field after a career-best, final round two-over-par 70, while freshman Kathleen Strandberg made her case for playing time by finishing tied for 14th in her first collegiate tournament.
Junior Stephanie Derrey and senior Nancy Mountcastle tied for 21st as the squad tallied a three-day total of 937 to finish a mere eight strokes behind champion Memphis.
Doughtie was strong all weekend despite tough playing conditions the first day. She was outstanding in the final round, notching the top score among all players in the tournament all weekend. Her score of 226 included rounds of 79 and 77 in the first two rounds, respectively.
NC State wrapped up the fall by posting its second best finish of the season with a seventh-place showing at the three-day, 54-hole Landfall Tradition hosted by UNC Wilmington. The Wolfpack improved each day over the length of the three-day tournament to finish seventh among 12 teams in the field.
Doughtie shot a two-over-par 74 in the final round and wound up 13th overall at 229 (+13). The Suffolk, Va. native had one of only two eagles tallied in the tournament on the par-five 8th hole on Sunday. Doughtie finished as the Pack’s top performer for the third straight tournament, while also posting her third consecutive top-20 finish.
Doughtie wound up leading the team in stroke average in the fall with a 75.5. She was followed by Mountcastle’s 77.9 stroke average as the Durham, N.C., native started all four events.
Also in the starting lineup for all four events was Derrey, who posted a 78.1 average, which featured a top-20 showing at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational for the Paris, Fance native. Meanwhile, junior Jessica Vincent compiled a 78.3 average in the four events and shot a career-low round of 70 during the second round of the Cougar Classic, which propelled her to finish tied for 14th in the season-opening tournament.
Freshmen Kristin Vincent and Standberg each saw action in two events. Vincent, the younger sister of teammate Jessica Vincent, had a 79.3 stroke average over six rounds, while Strandberg earned an 80.0 average, which featured her top-15 showing at the Wildcat Fall Invite.
