Gymnastics Wins Governor's Cup

Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State gymnastics team scored a 194.600 and won the annual Governor’s Cup held at Reynolds on Friday night. North Carolina finished second with a 194.200, Maryland was third at 191.925, and Towson placed fourth with a 191.850. The Wolfpack and the Tar Heels combined for a score of 388.880, as the state of North Carolina won the Governor’s Cup over the state of Maryland (383.775).
NC State started the meet on vault, and posted a team score of 48.975, its second-highest score on vault this season. Junior Leigha Hancock earned the Pack’s top score with a 9.875 for a third place showing. Senior Rachel Katz was close behind in sixth, with her 9.85, and junior Heather Zolton scored a 9.8 for 10th. Rounding out the scoring was junior Kelsey Lee with a 9.75 and sophomore Ashley Shepard with a 9.7.
The Pack moved over to bars, and came away with a season best team tally of 48.725. Senior Amanda Jones had the top showing, as she won bars with a 9.8. Zolton and freshman Taylor Seaman each matched each other with a pair of 9.75s. Kelsey Lee landed a 9.725, while fellow junior Laurie Singer scored a 9.7.
The Pack came away with a 48.300 on beam in the third rotations. Senior Katie Ozburn scored a 9.75 for second place to pace the Pack. Freshman Lauren Deuser was close behind with a 9.725, while Zolton came away with a 9.7. Rounding out the scoring on beam was Seaman with a 9.6 and Jones with her 9.575.
NC State finished the meet on floor with a team score of 48.550. Seaman finished second on floor with her score of 9.825. Classmates Hancock and Zolton had matching 9.7s. Rounding out the scoring, Shepard had a 9.675 and Katz scored a 9.65.
In the all-around, Zolton took third with her 38.950, while Seaman was fourth with a 38.850.
NC State will be on the road next weekend, competing at North Carolina on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The Wolfpack will return to home action on Saturday, February 17, hosting the Hearts Invitational at 7:00 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum.
