Pack Feels Good About Last Meet

Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State gymnastics team got the chance to travel to conference rival North Carolina last weekend, and although the Pack finished second in the five team meet, NC State felt good obout having a ‘no fall’ meet. Senior Rachel Katz brought home two second-place finishes, and took the time to write about her thoughts from that meet.
Katz: Last Sunday’s meet against the University of North Carolina, George Washington University, James Madison University, and the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh was a great stepping stone in preparation for the remainder of the season. After defeating UNC the previous week, we felt very confidant going into the weekend. We had a strong meet but UNC was a little sharper. Throughout the competition we remained focus on our routines and left with a quality score, that will help us qualify towards NCAA Regionals.
We started this meet on floor and some minor mistakes, however there were a lot of things done well. Senior Amanda Jones competed on floor for the first time this year after taking it easy due to an ankle injury. We started off the meet posting a 48.425 and high scores coming from junior Leigha Hancock, sophomore Ashley Shepard, and myself. Vault was next and everyone did their part. We all had very dynamic vaults with a great exhibition coming from freshman Olga Bodrikova.
From vault we moved on to bars and the positive attitudes and energy stayed high. I was amazed at how well the team stayed together and stayed focused. Junior Laurie Singer had an amazing save on her bar routine to help in our “no fall” meet and senior Suzanne Price got to exhibition her bar routine that she’s worked hard on. I was so happy to see her make it through and succeed under all the pressure.
After bars we had a bye since there were five competitive teams and beam came last. I was a little nervous for this since we had just come off a rotation of ‘doing nothing.’ Warm ups on beam seemed a little shaky but again, the team pulled through with an amazing performance by Leigha. Junior Kelsey Lee also competed and had a solid performance while senior Arien Stainback exhibitioned a beautiful routine.
In all, the meet was a great learning experience. We are finally getting comfortable performing our routines and now it’s time to polish them up. There will definitely be more stuck landings, no leg separations, and staying in-bounds on floor. We are looking forward to this coming weekend with our Sweetheart Invitational (Nebraska and conference rival West Virginia) will be on hand.
