RALEIGH, N.C. - Seniors Heather Gelbard and Abbie Sims were both named to the Carolina Classic All-Tournament Team on Monday, Feb. 12, for their performances at the three-day affair over the past weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. The experienced duo helped lead NC State to a 3-1 record to start the season, grabbing wins over Ohio, Gardner-Webb and Coastal Carolina.
Gelbard started all four of the Pack's games, collecting four hits in nine at-bats, scoring three runs, and knocking in five RBIs. She belted two home runs and drew four walks to help propel the Pack's offense throughout the weekend.
Sims grabbed two wins from the circle and played in the outfield when she wasn't pitching. She tossed a complete game no hitter against Ohio in the season opener, and allowed just two hits in another complete game performance against Gardner-Webb. She fanned the only batter that she faced against Penn State. In all, Sims allowed just two hits while striking out 28 batters and issuing five free passes.
From the batter's box Sims grabbed four hits in 12 at-bats, including a home run against Ohio and a double against Coastal Carolina.
NC State will return to the field this coming weekend at the Cox Communications Classic in Gainesville, Fla. The three-day affair is hosted by the Florida Gators. The Pack will play two games on Friday, Feb. 16, taking on Marshall at 9 a.m., before battling Fordham at 11:15 a.m.
