Volleyball Falls to Virginia, 3-0

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State volleyball team fell to Virginia, 3-0, on Thursday, Nov. 8, in the second to last home match of the season. The loss sends the Wolfpack to 3-24 (0-17 ACC) on the year, while the Cavaliers improve to 16-10 (11-6 ACC).
Lauren Zaniboni led the Pack in kills with eight in 39 total attacks. Chrissy Zirpolo added seven kills of her own plus 12 digs. Alex Smith generated 19 assists, and five different players had blocks, with Jana Angel securing a solo block. The team as a whole nailed 130 total attacks.
The Cavaliers were led by Sarah Kirkwood in total attacks (35) and digs (17). Kelly Irvin grabbed 43 assists, and Kendahl Voelker led the team in kills with 11. Tara Hester, A.J. Cushman, and Sydney Hill all had service aces, and the team had a total of 19 blocks.
NC State roared back from a slow start to fight to within three points in the opening game, but the Cavaliers were able to pull away and come out on top, 30-22. A kill by Voelker added to Virginia’s lead, making the score 24-20 and the Cavaliers continued to push ahead, allowing only two more Wolfpack points.
The Pack stayed in control the first half of the second round before Virginia gained momentum and emerged with the win, 30-16. NC State maintained its lead until Katie Oakes nailed a kill to give the Cavaliers its second and final lead of the game. State got just two points the rest of the way on a UVa service error and a Smith kill.
The Cavaliers controlled the third and final game, leading by as many as 15 points at one point. NC State tried to stop Virginia by attacking its defense, but the Cavaliers ended up taking down the Pack, 30-16.
NC State will host its final home match on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m against the Virginia Tech Hokies. Seniors Andi Bentley, Kasey Rhyne, and Ashley Wallace will be recognized following their final match on NC State’s campus.
