Track & Field Opens Season at Liberty Kickoff

NC State Track and Field is competing at the Liberty Kickoff to open the 2008 season this weekend. The event is being held in Lynchburg, Va. and runs Nov. 30-Dec. 1. The Wolfpack is sending 15 female athletes and 14 male competitors and both squads will send sprinters, jumpers and throwers to the meet.
The women's team will send eight sprinters; Marilynn Angell, Jessica Jones, Lauren Montgomery, Chapin Payne, Brenda Stanton, Elizabeth Styron, Cassandra Williams and Melanie Yelardy.
Williams is eighth in school history in the 60 meters, ninth in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 meters during her career.
In addition, six jumpers will compete for the women; Ashley Neal, Alesha Patterson, Dekalah Price, Njeri Wainaina, DeMiracle Washington and Kayla Lawson.
Washington is sixth in the long jump and second in the triple jump in school history for the Pack. Lawson has also found success in multiple events, including a ninth place mark in the long jump school record book.
One thrower, Casey Garland, will compete in the meet for the women's team. Garland has the eight best javelin throw mark in school history.
On the men's side, five sprinters will compete for the men, including the school record holder in the 60 meters with a 6.72 second time last season. In addition, Reggie Reese will also compete in the sprints. Reese's time of 6.82 last season is the second fastest time in school history in the 60 meters. Stephen Gardner, Armand Quenum and Miles Walker will also run sprints.
Dexter Adams, who owns the fourth-best mark in school history in the long jump, will lead the pack of jumpers at the kickoff. Logan Blair, Eric Davis, Emmanuel Davis and Travis Weston are also competing.
In throws, Jason Jones leads the Pack as a returning regional qualifier, and he will be joined in the throwing events at the Liberty meet by Stephen Dickens, Adam Gray and Charles Weinfeld.
The bulk of the track and field season starts on Jan. 12 with an indoor meet in Chapel Hill, N.C.
