Volleyball Drops Season Finale to Miami, 3-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. NC State volleyball fell to Miami, 3-0, in a closely contested match in Coral Gables, Fla., on Friday, Nov. 23. The loss ends the Pack's season with a 3-29 (0-22 ACC) record, while the Hurricanes finish at 14-17 (8-14 ACC). The contest also marks the final collegiate match for seniors Andi Bentley, Kasey Rhyne and Ashley Wallace.
Wallace led the Wolfpack offense with a team-best nine kills, while both Lauren Zaniboni and Aiwane Iboaya added six each. Alex Smith recorded 26 assists, and Nikki Sweet had two service aces. Lindsay Benac etched nine digs, and Iboaya and Keri DeMar both had five blocks.
Bridget Bomhack and Genny Mayhew each had 13 kills for UM, as Katie Gallagher had 48 assists. Cassie Loessberg (17), Michelle Bruin (14) and Bomhack (11) combined for 42 of the Hurricanes 55 digs. Angelica Ellis landed three service aces, and Ciara Michel and Bomhack each had three blocks.
Action was tight in game one, with the Pack trailing at 13-10 early on. Miami, however, scored four-straight, moving its advantage to 17-10. Facing match point at 29-22, the red and white collected four scores in a row, but a Mayhew kill ended the game in UM's favor at 30-26.
Miami hit a match-high .400, while State offered match-low .030 clip, in the second game as the Hurricanes cruised to a 30-16 decision.
NC State led in the third and final frame,12-17, until UM tied things up at 21-all on back-to-back attack errors by DeMar and Zaniboni. The Hurricanes led briefly, but the Pack tied things again at 28-28, and later at 30-30 on a Wallace kill to force extra play. But Miami immediately grabbed the next two scores, shutting the door on the evening at 32-30.
A defensive specialist from Cary, N.C., and a graduate of Cardinal Gibbons High School, Bentley has left her mark on the Wolfpack volleyball program. She led the team in digs in three of her four years with the Pack and is currently one of only 10 players to compile over 1,000 for her career. She finishes her career in ninth-place in school history with 1,132 digs. Bentley has excelled off the court as well, having been named to the All-ACC Academic team twice, while making the Dean’s List in each of her three previous years. She will graduate with a degree in biological sciences.
A defensive specialist from Mount Holly, N.C., Rhyne came to State in the spring of 2005 after a two-year stint at Brevard College. She saw action in 28 matches and compiled 119 digs in her first year with the Pack. Over the past two seasons, Rhyne has served as a pivotal spark off the bench for the red and white. She was named an NC State/Caterpillar Scholar Athlete in 2006 and will graduate with a degree in business management.
A middle blocker from Amherst, Ohio, Wallace has enjoyed a successful career at NC State, improving with each season. She has been a leader on the court for the Wolfpack this year, leading the team in blocks and serving as a valuable offensive weapon. She is a two-time NC State/Caterpillar Scholar Athlete and has been named to the Dean’s List. She will graduate with a degree in biological sciences.
