RALEIGH, N.C. - We started off last week with a relaxing Monday. We had our usual lifting, but instead of practice we had a film session. In our film session we were to write things down about our individual performance that we noticed, good or bad. From these things we were to write down goals, individually and we wanted to work on for the last two weeks of our season. Our strategy is to forget everything that happened during the past season, and go into these last two weeks as if it were a new season, a clean slate, with a new and improved mind set.
On Tuesday we started off with conditioning, and then headed into a practice centered on defense. Every drill we did required quick reactions, and the maximum amounts of communication. Wednesday was very similar, and also dealt with maintaining high energy, and communication. On Thursday we incorporated more scrimmaging, and working on things that would be important in our upcoming matches.
Our first match was on Friday against Wake Forest. We did not do a very good job coming into this match with our mindset. We didn’t come together as a team, or play for each other in the first two games. We also didn’t do a very good job of taking our energy from the previous practices and bringing it into the match. After our mid-match speech, we came back into the third game with more fire in our hearts, but we still couldn’t find the spark to really make us ignite. We ended up dropping the match in three.
Saturday evening was our last match of the week, when we took on Duke. We were really excited going into the match, and we felt very prepared for what laid ahead of us. We also came into the match with confidence, especially after having some success in the last match against the Blue Devils. We played much better as a team in this match compared to the night before, and we definitely came out with a better mindset, but it still wasn’t exactly what we were looking for. A lot of our faults came from unforced errors, or occasional breakdowns in serve and receive, but we would always find the energy to bounce back. We dropped the match in three, but we were happy with our ability to bounce back from the night before and come out as a new team.
This week we will have only one practice before flying out on Tuesday for our last two matches of the season in Florida. We will play Florida State on Wednesday, and Miami on Friday. We are all looking forward to working extremely hard in our last practice in order to feel prepared for this weekend. We are really itching to get that win, and we all feel confident that if we can bring in the competitiveness from Saturday night, that we will pull one out this weekend. I am confident that by this time next week I will be writing you all and letting you know about our big win!
