RALEIGH, N.C. Maryland shutout the NC State volleyball team in three games on Friday, Nov. 2, on the NC State campus. With the loss the Pack falls to 3-22 (0-15 ACC) on the year, while the Terrapins improve to 15-9 (7-8 ACC).
Lauren Zaniboni led the red and white with 12 kills, and Alex Smith lifted 32 assists. Lindsey Benac recorded 14 digs, and Aiwane Iboaya had eight total blocks. Andi Bentley scored the team’s lone service ace.
Beth Gillming (16) and Jade Brown (11) combined for 27 of the Terps 44 kills. Hayley Hanson had 33 assists, and Maggie Schmelzle added 18 digs. Katie Usher secured five total blocks.
State was out-hit .183 to .020.
The Wolfpack led by three well into the first game, but the Terrapins tied things up at 13-all on a Keri DeMar attack error before taking the lead on the next point. Maryland stayed out in front until the Pack knotted the score at 22-22, but NC State would only manage five more scores from that point on, falling 30-27.
The Terps began the second frame with a 13-2 blitz, but State used several runs of its own to chip away at Maryland’s lead and pull to within four at 26-22. Maryland’s advantage, however, was just too much to overcome as the Terrapins withstood State’s late barrage and held on, 30-24.
It looked like the Pack was experiencing dj vu at the onset of the third and final game, as Maryland came out of the break on a 10-3 tear. State, however, didn’t have enough gas in its tank to mount another comeback, falling 30-15.
NC State will take on Boston College at historic Reynolds Coliseum this Sunday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast live online via ACC Select. Click here for more information.
