Women's Tennis Finishes USTA Women's College Tennis Invitational

The women’s tennis team wrapped up play at the USTA Women’s College Tennis Invitational in New York, NY over the weekend. The tournament was played at the world-renowned Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Julia Roach and Catherine Grotz were the top performers for the Pack as they both advanced to the semifinal round in their respective draws.
In the B singles draw Julia Roach started her tournament by defeating Samantha Rosekrans from Harvard 6-2, 7-6 and beating Nina Suda of Columbia 6-2, 7-5. She advanced to the semifinal round by winning 7-5, 6-3 over Sarah Lederhandler from Yale before losing to the number two seed, Charlie Tansil, from University of Pennsylvania 6-3, 6-0.
Catherine Grotz competed in the D singles draw and defeated Ryan Reichel of Dartmouth in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. She continued her winning ways by defeating Jessica Gomez of Washington State 6-2, 6-1 and beating Emily Barnett of St. John’s 7-5, 6-1. In her semifinal match she lost to the number two seed Tiffany Clifford of Texas A&M 6-4, 6-3.
Lenka Hojckova was also in the B singles bracket and won her opening match over Katherine Arlak of Rutgers is commanding fashion with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. She then defeated Jessie Rhee of Yale 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 in a close three set victory.
Competing in the same B singles bracket, Neils Barringer lost a close three set match against Tanja Vucetic of Brown 4-6, 6-3, 12-10. She battled back in consolation bracket with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Sarah Lotto of Penn State before losing another three set heartbreaker to Amy Zhang of Rutgers 6-2, 3-6, 12-10.
Kristen Bleakely lost her opening match in the C singles bracket to Natasha Makarova of Columbia 6-3, 0-6, 10-6. She came back in the consolation bracket and won in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 10-4, over Liz Corrao from Boston University before dropping her final match of the tournament 6-1, 6-2 to Katharine Attwell of Boston College.
Berkeley Brock competed in the A singles draw and dropped her opening match to Molly Scott of Dartmouth 6-4, 6-2. She was forced to default her final two matches of the tournament.
In doubles play Lenka Hojckova and Julia Roach teamed up to advance to the quarterfinals of the A doubles draw. In the opening round they defeated Bianca Aboudakare and Marisa Schonfeld of Brown 8-0 and in the round of 16 they beat Jessie Rhee and Stevi Petrelli of Yale 8-6. In their quarterfinal match they lost 8-2 to Blakely Ashley and Sarah Huah of Princeton.
Berkeley Brock and Kristen Bleakely also teamed up in the A doubles bracket. They started with an 8-4 victory over Katharine Attwell and Dasha Cherkasov of Boston College. In the second round they defeated Danielle Abraham and Cori Lefkowith of Boston University 8-6 before having to default in the quarterfinal round.
In the B doubles draw Neils Barringer and Catherine Grotz lost their opening round match 9-7 to Carling Donovan and Natasha Makarova of Columbia. In the consolation bracket they won their two final matches in impressive fashion. They defeated Brett Finkelstein and Tanya Vucetic of Brown 8-0 before winning 8-2 over Lauren Holzberg and Julie Raezer of Penn State.
The team will return to action October 17th as they compete at the ITA Mideast Regional Indoor Championships in Chapel Hill, NC.
