Wake Forest to Visit Volleyball on Saturday
10/5/2007 12:00:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
RALEIGH, N.C. After showing marked signs of improvement and promise across its last several matches, NC State volleyball will host Wake Forest this Saturday, Oct. 6 at historic Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
State has secured at least one game in each of its last four ACC meetings, something it hadn’t done previously since 1999. The last time a Wolfpack team won at least one game in five-straight conference contests was in 1998.
NC State hasn’t beaten Wake Forest since 1997, when it took a 3-2 decision at the old ACC Tournament that has since been disbanded.
The Wolfpack will enter the match carrying a 3-13 (0-6 ACC) slate. Alex Smith (35 assists, 17 digs) and Lauren Zaniboni (15 kills, 10 digs) both posted double-double performances in an energetic 3-1 loss to No. 13 Duke on Oct. 4. Zaniboni continues to lead the team in kills (185), while Smith fronts the assist category (475). Keri DeMar (107) and Chrissy Zirpolo ( 99) remain a point of impact for the red and white offense, while Nikki Sweet’s team-high 181 digs steadies the defensive. Ashley Wallace has played extremely well of late, especially around the net, and carries 41 total blocks, tops on the roster.
The Demon Deacons (6-9 / 3-3 ACC) were shut out by North Carolina its last time on the court on Oct. 4., and have dropped five of its last eight matches. Kelsey Jones (45 assists, 17 digs) and Kristin White (13 digs, 13 kills) both put up double-doubles against the Tar Heels, with White collecting her second double-double in as many matches. The achievement marked the fourth in five matches for Jones. Natalie Mullikin fronts the team’s offensive production with 196 kills, while Jessica Furlong (182) and White (105) serve as heavy contributors. Megan Thornberry has amassed 199 digs and 15 service aces on the year.
NC State will return to the road next weekend, traveling to Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Pack will take on the Cavaliers on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in Charlottesville, before squaring off against the Hokies on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. in Blacksburg.
